I would strongly urge you to read Magician (now in two books as Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master) and Silverthorn before reading this book, as it would make much more sense.
Murmandamus has returned to again seek the death of Arutha, Prince of Krondor, and to bring war to the Kingdom in the world of Midkemia. Staging his own death, Arutha sets out with his friends to find and kill his enemy. Murmandamus has not been idle in the year that passed since the last attempt - some 50,000 have heard his call to arms, gathering in the Northlands, amongst them moredhel (a type of dark elf), goblins, trolls, giants and renegade humans.
As Arutha and his companions venture north, they are captured and taken to the city of Armengar, where an old banished enemy now rules. Yet in the light of the threat of Murmandamus, they work together in the defense of Armengar. Against the backdrop of this action, Pug the magician and Tomas, a strange mix of human and Valheru Dragon Lord, seek out the one thought dead - the powerful sorcerer Macros the Black. Their journey takes them both through space and time, in an effort to gain knowledge of the true nature of the Enemy (the true power behind Murmandamus) and how they can try to stop it.

Feist's strong suit is character building, and this novel is no exception - by the end each feels like some old friend. Feist does well in pacing the book also - keeping enough suspense and flipping between different characters to make you keep turning the pages.
There are a few questions of logic that may be raised - most notably in the manipulation of time. These small queries do not make the book less worthy of the 5 stars I gave it, and I thoroughly recommend it.
