Usually, the first novel of a series is one that should drag you into the plot, a driving force that keeps you wanting more of the story. Luckily, this book does just that, but in a different way. While this book does tell a grand and wonderfully spun tale of two young boys embarking on a grand adventure, it seems as if it is a big build to get you to the next book. Ah, but I am ahead of myself, let me explain.
I had read this book way back when I was in the fifth grade during our 'silent reading' times. Now, six years later, I felt that when I read it those years ago, I never fully appreciated it; I didn't even remember most of the story. So, I decided that I'd give it another go, and I was glad I did. Immediately I was immersed into the world of Midkemia, and into the lives of young Pug and Tomas. As I read on, I found myself laughing at some of their exploits while growing up. Then, suddenly, everything turns around.
The boys, along with many others, begin a journey that leads them to many different parts of Midkemia. And while their journey is taken on an ominous note, Feist manages to squeeze that same boyish lightheartedness throughout. Another thing changes (though I won't reveal it due to spoilers) and now some of that lightheartedness is gone for me, though I keep reading on.

I think you see where I'm going with this. This book has change after change after change, which is a good thing. The author never lets you stay comfortable, for the moment you do, your tranquil little world is tinkered with. This is what I think the book is about, changes in life and growing up, though it is embedded within a great ongoing plot at the same time.
And while I love this book, it's these changes that lead you to the next book, which is where the plot kicks into full gear. Of course that's not to say this book is bad, because it isn't.
Overall, this is an enjoyable ride that will leave you constantly guess what will come next as the characters go through their tribulations. It's adventure, it's the path to adulthood, it's war, and it's all built up for the second novel.
